Doctor’s Orders

Posted on February 25, 2017

In this busy cold season, many of us find ourselves heading to the pharmacy after our doctor appointment armed with a handful of prescriptions to combat this year’s super bug. When we hand these scripts off to the pharmacy, we assume when we pick them up we will receive just what the doctor ordered. Most of the time, we do – but mistakes do happen, and whether it is due to our doctor’s poor handwriting, pharmacist fatigue, or just simple human error, sometimes we don’t receive what was intended. These mistakes, though innocent and unintentional, can cause great harm, and can even be fatal in the wrong set of circumstances. What can we do if this happens?

Protect Yourself

There are steps you can take to protect yourself against the chances that you will be given the incorrect drugs when your prescriptions are filled. First, be cognizant that mistakes do happen.  Check your prescription before you leave the pharmacy counter to ensure it is what you anticipated receiving. Accept the pharmacist’s offer to be counseled on the prescription and make sure it matches what your doctor told you.

Righting A Wrong

If an error has been made, make sure to let the pharmacy know; your attention to detail could prevent additional mistakes from being made. If the error is a serious one, and you have suffered harm, you need to not only bring it to the attention of the pharmacy and your doctor, but you will also need to speak with an attorney about what legal options you may have. Whether the error stemmed from your physician or the pharmacy, there may be a medical malpractice issue that you need to pursue; in more extreme cases in which pharmacy error has led a fatality, a wrongful death action may be necessary.
